Police Dismantle A Camp With Hundreds Of Migrants In Calais

Police dismantle a camp with hundreds of migrants in Calais. Around 600 people had settled there since Friday.

The French police on Friday dismantled a camp with several hundred migrants that had been established in some warehouses in a neighborhood on the outskirts of the French city of Calais , the main port of connection with Great Britain.

The Prefecture (a government delegation) explained on its Twitter account that the operation began at 6 am “at the instruction of the Ministry of the Interior” and based on a judicial decision.

The evacuation of the around 600 people – according to the figures given by the authorities – took place in the Virval neighborhood, near the Calais hospital, in some warehouses where they had found refuge for a few months.

The migrants were directed by the forces of order to a dozen buses to be sent to different reception centers in the department of Pas de Calais.

About thirty children
The Prefecture said in a statement, in which it pointed out that about thirty children lived in the ships , that before the evacuation the occupants had been proposed to transfer them to different shelters.

The owner of the ships had filed a complaint about the occupation, which had led to an expulsion order.

On Tuesday night there had been a stab fight involving some thirty people.

The mayor of Calais, Natacha Bouchart, and the president of the region, Xavier Bertrand, had demanded that the Government evacuate that camp to prevent a large-scale implantation such as the one outside the city from being reconstituted in the city , known as “the jungle”.
